Driving into Demonte Colony, for actress Nikki Galrani, is a bone-chilling experience. As she puts on the final touches of makeup for the Halloween special photoshoot, Nikki leaves it all up to God. "I hope us being here doesn't awaken any ghosts, and even if they do, I hope they don't attack me," she says in mock anxiety.
However, Nikki has been spooked out at Demonte Colony before — and this one's for real. The actress, who describes herself as "a person who is super scared of anything supernatural, especially ghosts," recalls the experience of visiting one of Chennai's most allegedly haunted areas, amid pouting and posing for the camera.
"This incident happened a couple of years ago, before I moved to Chennai. My friends told me about the legend behind the place and then we just drove to Demonte Colony in the middle of the night. There was barely any light and it was absolutely spooky. The houses very much existed back then (they have now been razed) and there wasn't even a mouse on the road. Then I looked up at one of the trees, ironically the same one we are shooting under right now, and I saw what looked like a human head hanging from it. I was shaking in my boots, till my friends told me it was actually a plastic cover," narrates Nikki.
Not one to prod awake a sleeping ghost, Nikki says she has consciously stayed away from experimenting with the supernatural. "I haven't even played the Ouija board, I am that terrified," she laughs, adding that she has visited scary houses before. "That is about all I can stomach. I visited one in Bangalore, which had all these fake poltergeists put up, with really creepy interiors. I must admit it was a lot of fun."
Nikki, ironically, made her Tamil debut in a horror-comedy film, Darling, in which she played a possessed woman. "I had no experience to draw from," she laughs, adding, "But the entire shooting process, I must say, was more stressful than spooky. Acting like you are possessed is not easy! It was a different kind of experience altogether."
Halloween for the actress means getting together with friends. "I have never really gone all out with a costume before, but I love experimenting with face paints to get a scary look. Scars, bruises, wounds, I have done them all," she smiles.
